How to Germinate Cannabis Seeds

This guide is for educational and informational purposes only. Cannabis cultivation laws vary by country, state, and municipality. Always verify that growing cannabis is legal in your jurisdiction before starting. GanjaSeedIndex does not encourage any illegal activity.

Germination is the process of getting a seed to sprout. Understanding seed biology is valuable for collectors, breeders, and legal home growers.

The Paper Towel Method

This is the most widely used technique:

  1. Place 2-3 sheets of damp (not soaking) paper towel on a plate
  2. Place seeds on the towel, spaced at least 2cm apart
  3. Cover with another 2-3 sheets of damp paper towel
  4. Cover the plate with a second plate to create a dark, humid environment
  5. Store in a warm place (20-25C / 68-77F)
  6. Check every 12 hours and keep the towel moist
  7. Seeds typically crack open and show a white taproot within 24-72 hours
  8. Once the taproot is 1-2cm long, carefully transplant to growing medium

Direct Soil Method

Some growers plant directly into soil:

  1. Fill a small pot with light, airy soil mix
  2. Moisten the soil until damp but not waterlogged
  3. Poke a hole 0.5-1cm deep
  4. Drop the seed in, pointy end up
  5. Cover lightly with soil — do not pack down
  6. Mist the surface and cover with cling wrap to maintain humidity
  7. Keep at 22-25C. Seedlings typically emerge in 3-7 days

Water Soaking Method

Useful for older or harder-shelled seeds:

  1. Drop seeds into a glass of room temperature water (20-22C)
  2. Store in a dark place for 12-24 hours
  3. Seeds that sink have absorbed water and are ready
  4. Transfer to paper towel or soil immediately
  5. Do not soak longer than 24 hours

Key Factors for Successful Germination

  • Temperature: The optimal range is 22-25C. Below 18C, germination slows significantly.
  • Moisture: Seeds need consistent moisture but cannot be waterlogged.
  • Darkness: Seeds germinate best without light. Light is only needed after the seedling emerges.
  • Handling: Taproots are extremely fragile. Handle minimally.
  • Water quality: Use pH-neutral water (6.0-7.0). Letting tap water sit for 24 hours helps dissipate chlorine.
  • Seed age: Seeds older than 2-3 years may have reduced viability. Pre-soaking can help.
  • Autoflowers: Should be placed in their final container immediately, as they do not respond well to transplanting.
